Rationalization
Oracle to PostgreSQL Migration
Our priority: migrating with no data loss.
Switching database engines takes far more than copying tables. Your decision may come from licensing costs, an open-source strategy or a move to the cloud. Whatever the reason, a cross-database migration affects your schema, code, data, applications and the teams who run them. Our consultants know both worlds well, Oracle and PostgreSQL. They support you from the feasibility study through to running your new environment, adapting the approach to your production constraints.
Feasibility Study
Assess the effort before you commit.
Before any migration, we take inventory of your current environment: data volumes, objects, PL/SQL code, Oracle-specific features, application dependencies and availability requirements. This analysis lets us accurately estimate the conversion effort, identify blocking issues and choose the right cutover strategy, so you can make an informed decision. We assess in particular:
- Schema and data type compatibility
- The volume and complexity of PL/SQL code (packages, triggers, procedures)
- Use of Oracle-specific features (partitioning, DBMS_* packages, database links, synonyms…)
- The impact on applications and third-party tools
- The expected benefits, especially on licensing
Schema and Code Conversion
Not just translated, but re-engineered.
Some differences between Oracle and PostgreSQL are subtle. Oracle treats an empty string as NULL while PostgreSQL does not, Oracle’s DATE type also stores the time, and identifier case is handled differently… We convert your schema, sequences, views and PL/SQL code to PL/pgSQL. Constructs with no direct equivalent (packages, CONNECT BY, ROWNUM, (+) outer joins, autonomous transactions, etc.) are rewritten while preserving their functional behavior.
Data Migration
Move all of your data, intact.
We implement the transfer strategy best suited to your data volumes and maintenance window: full load, batch migration or continuous replication to minimize downtime. Type conversions, character sets and large objects (LOBs) are handled with care.
Application Adaptation
Bring your applications along.
Embedded SQL queries, database drivers, ORMs and batch jobs often need adjusting. We identify what needs to change and support your development teams, or your software vendor, so your applications run on PostgreSQL exactly as before.
Testing and Validation
Prove that nothing was lost.
A migration is only successful once it has been verified. We compare source and target data (row counts, checksums, functional queries provided by your teams), validate the behavior of the converted code and benchmark performance on representative workloads before cutover.
Cutover and Post-Migration Support
Secure the go-live and what comes next.
We prepare and run the cutover, with a rollback plan. After the migration, we tune PostgreSQL performance (configuration, indexing, execution plans) and set up high availability and backups matched to your requirements. We can also train your teams to operate the new environment.
Other Migrations
Every major technology.
Our expertise also covers other cross-database migrations, including to NoSQL engines, for example from SQL Server to PostgreSQL or from PostgreSQL to MongoDB.
